(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) is getting support for his package of bills to help foster youth from Katarina and Shay - both former foster care youth. Katarina Kabick, 22, and UC Berkeley graduate student, testified in a legislative committee at the State Capitol. “I first entered foster care when I was 6 months old and I was emancipated at 18. During this time, I experienced 32 placement changes. I was pulled out of homes at the middle of the night and from schools in the middle of the day,” she said. Shay Holliman is spending her time mentoring and guiding other foster youth. “I want them to understand that it’s not OK for people to tell them that they can’t speak out because of who they are and their background.” Assemblymember Gipson says he is committed to making things better for foster youth, “They want the same things as someone who is not foster youth. They want love, happiness and want to feel like they are a part of- and connected to.” Learn more about Assemblymember Gipson’s legislation and Katarina and Shay in this Assembly Web Report.
