Trump’s immigrant ‘wealth test’ overturned in Federal court

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO, Calif  (Nov. 1, 2020) --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released the following statement on the Federal Court’s ruling that the Trump administration stop the public charge rule.

“Judge Gary Scott Feinerman of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois today overturned the Trump administration’s public charge rule, also known as the ‘wealth test,’ a policy that allowed officials to deny green cards to immigrants who might need public assistance, such as food stamps, housing vouchers and health care.

“Many of those who come to this country are leaving war torn, violent and impoverished areas to make a better life for themselves and their family. Most come here with nothing more than the clothes on their backs, hoping for the ‘American dream’ of a better life. They should be able to receive public assistance and resources to help get them on their feet.

“Instead, many of our immigrant brothers and sisters have been suffering in silence, afraid that receiving any assistance would deny them access to a green card and eventual citizenship.

“This stops now, Thank you, Judge Feinerman!”
