SACRAMENTO, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released the following statement on the California’s June Revision State Budget:
“In spite of an erratic White House and undependable federal funds, California’s legislative branches have finalized a budget agreement that will tap our rainy-day reserves to help maintain vital services for Californians during this difficult time.
“A big concern in my district was the possible loss of funding for Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital – an action that would have jeopardized the lives of an already disenfranchised and health-challenged population. Fortunately, my colleagues understood the importance of MLK Hospital and wholeheartedly supported maintaining the vital funding.
“The Budget Act of 2020 (SB 74 Holly Mitchell & AB 89 Phil Ting) included a restoration of approximately $30 million in ongoing, supplemental payments for services at MLK Community Hospital, cuts proposed by the Governor in his May revision.
“Other district successes included the restoration of a $2 million proposed funding cut from the Compton Creek revitalization project. The Budget will also allocate $45 million in new funding for the California Community Schools Partnership through 2025 that will provide wraparound services to address food insecurity, mental health support and inadequate healthcare for students.
“California’s recent economic losses have fallen disproportionately hard on low income households and people of color. No matter how we look at it, any cuts deeply hurt our most vulnerable, poor and young populations. In addition to looking at solutions for recovery, I continue to seek opportunities to reimagine a better and stronger 64th District and California.”
