Assembly Caucus Chair Mike Gipson’s Statement on the Passing of Journalist/Activist Larry Aubry

For immediate release:

CARSON, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released the following statement on the passing of journalist and activist Larry Aubry:

“As a young man working for then Los Angeles City Councilman Robert Farrell, I met this extraordinary individual, a tireless fighter for the disenfranchised in our community.

“Larry Aubry was the type of man who stood for something - justice. He was fearless, taking leaders to task and calling out racism and oppression in his weekly columns in the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper. He was a life-long activist whose agenda was solely that of lifting up black people.

“After 33 years, he retired his pen. In Larry’s final column, dated April 25, 2019, he wrote, ‘…we must unapologetically take control of our own destiny, develop and pursue our own agenda, build appropriate coalitions and alliances, and continue to struggle for racial and social justice without compromise… So, I say a kind of farewell, for real soldiers never really quit, they just move to other positions on the battlefield for the justice and good life we all deserve and will eventually achieve through unity, strength and determination.’

“Larry, because you shed a spot light on the dark corners of systemic inequities our path forward is more purposeful and that much clearer.”
