CARSON, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released the following statement on the opening of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) testing site in Willowbrook:
“Today, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science became one of the newest drive-through sites for Coronavirus testing,” said Asm. Gipson. “The data underscores the fact that positive results for the virus point to communities of color where there has been little or no access to testing.
“Under the leadership of David Carlisle, M.D., CDU President/CEO and Sheila Young, M.D. who will serve as Director/Manager of the testing site, residents at risk for the virus will have easier access.
“Dr. Young has participated in two of my Coronavirus townhalls where she shared valuable information regarding the virus. At CDU, she is the Director of Pre-Medical Education and Enhanced Post Baccalaureate Certificate Program and an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor in the College of Science and Health at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science. Dr. Young is also an internationally recognized medical expert who has worked in developing countries, studying healthcare systems and access to healthcare.
“I am confident that this team will provide ample and convenient testing . Additionally, they will collect necessary data to serve this often-overlooked population who routinely suffers multiple health disparities.”
