CARSON, Calif --- “Last night, Carson residents witnessed and heard a loud explosion that came from the Marathon Petroleum Facility site. While I am pleased that no injuries were reported, we must do everything we can to ensure wrap around safety for residents living in close proximities of refineries,” said Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson).
“I want to thank the first responders who acted quickly last night to extinguish the fire after the explosion. The Marathon Fire Department, Los Angeles County Fire Department, Carson Sheriff Station and the California Highway Patrol were instrumental in protecting lives and preventing what could have been a disastrous situation.
“I have requested the air quality reports so that I can continually monitor any possible present and future impact to our residents,” stated Gipson.
Today, Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) amended AB 2479 to extend the Refinery Safety Act (AB 2605, Gipson), which was signed into law by the Governor in 2018.
“On every level we need to make sure workers at refineries are able to respond quickly to an emergency,” said Asm. Gipson. “Safety is my number one concern at these locations. This bill will also allow for us to hold petroleum facilities accountable and give community members peace of mind.”
AB 2605 requires operators of petroleum facilities keep their radios on during their rest breaks in the event of an unplanned incident or emergency situation. As part of a pilot program, AB 2605 will expire January 1, 2021. As authored by Asm. Gipson, AB 2479 seeks to extend the life of AB 2605 beyond its sunset.
AB 2479 is currently awaiting legislative direction by the Assembly Rules Committee.
