CARSON, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released the following statement on Wednesday’s hoax Coronavirus alert:
“I am totally disgusted and dismayed at the insensitive hoax Coronavirus alert that was distributed widely throughout the City of Carson, emails and social media alleging that five patients presented to the Harbor UCLA Medical Center with symptoms.”
The letter, purportedly signed by a Department of Public Health official displayed logos of the CDC, World Health Organization and the County of Los Angeles.
“As updates come out regarding the coronavirus, it is important to remain calm and practice regular health precautions like washing your hands regularly. We don’t know why the City of Carson was targeted for this prank but the perpetrator should be identified and punished” said Asm. Gipson.
The L.A. County Dept. of Public Health also issued a statement warning of the false information and encouraging the public to visit the website PublicHealth.LACounty.gov for verified case information.
“It is understandable that some Californians may be nervous about potential spread of novel coronavirus, but the risk to the general public in California remains low,” said Dr. Sonia Angell, State Health Officer and California Public Health Department Director.
“The Department of Public Health has been closely tracking this virus and we are actively engaged with our local health departments, the CDC and local governments to make sure Californians remain safe and healthy.”
