SACRAMENTO, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) was the recipient of the California Community College African American Caucus “Legislator of the Year” award at the State Capitol on Monday, January 27, 2020.
“I am sincerely humbled to receive this prestigious award,” said Asm. Gipson. “Since elected in 2014, I have made it a priority to support the California Community College community. I am proud to say that I am a graduate of Southwest Community College.
“One of my first projects was to regain the governing authority and independent accreditation of Compton Community College by holding public oversight hearings and spearheading a successful bill to return local control back to the college
“Subsequently, the California Legislature Budget Committee committed $11.3 million to support the college’s long-term success just after they had officially been granted expedited accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCIC).
