Statement by Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson on the Saugus High School shooting in Santa Clarita

For immediate release:

CARSON, Calif ---  “This morning’s senseless school shooting has claimed the lives of a 16 y/o female student and a 14 y/o male student. Four other students, including the suspect, are hospitalized as the result of gun attack at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita,” said Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson).

“Today’s latest tragedy is yet another example of senseless gun violence that happens far too often. Innocent people have their futures snatched from them in the instant flash of gunfire. It underscores why we must pass sensible and prudent legislation to protect our families and communities.

“It goes without saying that we send our prayers but we have to do more.

“Tonight, I will be holding a prayer vigil with clergy and community members at New Philadelphia AME Church, 6380 Orange Ave., Long Beach, CA. 90805 at 6:00pm.

“Tomorrow, there will be a Rally Against Gun Violence at the Long Beach Convention Center, Pine Street Steps, 6:30pm. Elected officials, victims and families of gun violence, and organizations will sign a petition to demand action from Washington, D.C. to stem gun violence with sensible legislation.

“Santa Clarita is considered a safe, family-oriented city. These shootings can happen anywhere – and they do. Enough is enough!”
