CARSON, Calif --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson today released the following statement on the passing of director, screenwriter, producer and member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity:
“John Singleton leaves a legacy of excellence in filmmaking and portraying the Black urban experience. I am proud to say that he is also my Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity brother.
In 2016, he produced a documentary, ‘L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later.’ It is tragically ironic that he would pass on the 27th Anniversary of the civil unrest, April 28, 2019.
John, a native of South Los Angeles, was a trailblazer at age 24 when he was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Director for ‘Boyz in the Hood’ the youngest and first African American for that nomination. His work inspired all of us.My family and I offer prayers and our sincere condolences to his parents and children.”
