CARSON, Ca --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) and the Compton Community College District (CCCD) received notice today that the CCCD Substantive Change Application: Change in Local Control was accepted and approved by the Committee on Substantive Change of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC).
“This is great news! It has been my top priority to do everything, once elected in 2014, to support the Compton college community. Today, historic progress has been made by the ACCJC,” says Asm. Gipson. “Everyone from the college president and board of trustees to the faculty and staff has shown they are ready and capable of assuming all the duties of an independent college district.”
Last year, Asm. Gipson brought forward a funding proposal of $11.3 million in one-time funding that would allow the college to acquire the necessary technology, staff and other administrative capabilities that are critical to effectively running a self-standing college. As a result, the 2017 Legislative Budget Conference Committee approved the funding for the college.
Today, Compton College begins to take the steps to becoming an independent institution. Many steps were taken in the accreditation process. The ACCJC granted initial accreditation status during its June 7, 2017 meeting, re-establishing local control to CCCD. The Substantive Change Application was approved August 24, 2018, effectively placing CCCD on track to an independent institution. The Compton Community College District’s next step in the process is to request that the chancellor of the California Community Colleges issue an executive order declaring that Compton College will operate as an independent college under the authority of CCCD effective June 7, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
