LOS ANGELES, CA – Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) took to the streets Friday, July 13th to rally with the community against gun violence. The increase of gun violence throughout the 64th Assembly District, particularly in South Los Angeles, Compton, Watts/Willowbrook, Carson, and Wilmington is devastating.
Asm. Gipson encouraged the public to bring a pair of shoes belonging to or representing a victim lost to gun violence. The group shut down the corner of Manchester and Vermont avenues as hundreds of shoes flooded the streets in recognition of those who lost their lives.
Law enforcement, including LADP Chief Michel Moore and Sheriff Jim McDonnell, local residents, and clergy members came together to create a call to action for stricter gun legislation and to keep guns off the streets and out of the wrong hands.
Gipson, who carries a bill (AB2382) that would require background checks for anyone purchasing any part of a firearm used to assemble weapons at home, said “We’re tired of bearing our young. We’re tired of bearing our potential that could be growing up to be something magnificent, that could be contributors to our community. Enough is enough.”
“We’ve got to come to terms with the consequences of gun violence, the devastating cost — the lives that are lost, and the lives that are impacted for generations to come because of just senseless violence” Chief Moore addressed.
Asm. Gipson was elected in November 2014 to represent California’s 64th Assembly District that includes the communities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Lynwood, North Long Beach, Rancho Dominguez, South Los Angeles, Torrance, Watts/Willowbrook and Wilmington. He currently serves as Assembly Democratic Caucus Chair.
