Trump Administration Receives Scathing Critique after Support for New Immigration Bill

For immediate release:

SACRAMENTO --- Today, Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson (D-Carson) released a scathing critique of a new Trump Administration proposal that would cut the number of legal immigrants entering the United States by more than 50%.

“Here stands a prominent example of No. 45’s inability to lead as president of this country. Day in and day out, he continues to show that he is incapable of governing in a way that elevates and enhances the diversity of this country.  No. 45 is trying to take America back in time, to a place where America is openly hateful against African Americans and non-white immigrants. To a time where Blacks had to go to segregated schools and this country was entirely divided on the basis of race. The Administration’s new immigration policy will tear families apart and is part of their white nationalist agenda to erode the gains of decades of history. This is wrong and I am outraged because the community I represent has a large and diverse immigrant population, of which I am proud to serve, call my family and will stand up to fight for.  This is wrong, this is wrong, this is wrong.”

The policy was introduced by two Republican US Senators and has now become a top priority of the Administration. The measure is particularly harsh on families by reducing a legal resident’s ability to bring family members who are dependents or relatives. In addition, the new policy would cut off access to public benefits and prioritize immigrants from English speaking countries.
