Gipson Co-Authors House Resolution to Recognize and Celebrate Cinco de Mayo
(SACRAMENTO, Calif) – Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson, Chair of the Democratic Caucus, co-authored House Resolution (HR) 17 today to declare May 1-5 Cinco de Mayo week and honor the valiant spirit of the brave Mexicans who defeated the French army in the town of Puebla.
“As we celebrate this historical and cultural week in our history, we must continue with the same pride, dignity, courage, and respect that must be given not only to us here in America, but to those in Mexico who fought to seek justice and liberation” said Asm. Gipson. “As Democratic Caucus Chair, there is no better way to acknowledge the contributions made by our Latino community than to continue to protect and promote good immigration policies that represent the diversities of our golden state.”
Each Cinco de Mayo, the state legislature honors the valor of the outgunned Mexican militia in their improbable victory over the Imperial French army at the Battle of Puebla, 155 years ago. May 5 serves as an opportunity to celebrate the generations of contributions that Mexican Americans and all Latino Americans have made to the United States.
