(CARSON, Calif) --- Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson released the following statement looking back at the 1992 Civil Unrest in Los Angeles:
“As we reflect on the anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles Rebellion, we must ask ourselves if the climate that surrounded the events that triggered the civil unrest still exist. Fifty years ago (1965) Watts erupted in violence as a response to police abuse, racism and poverty. Twenty-five years ago, Los Angeles erupted in violence as a response to police abuse, racism and poverty. Although there have been many positive changes in policing, we are still dealing with situations of police abuse, racism and poverty. A study, released this week, from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs concluded that unemployment and poverty have worsened in some areas. Empty lots still stand where businesses once were. If history has taught us anything, it’s that much more work is still needed, at home and throughout our country.”
