Statement by Assemblymember Mike A. Gipson on Elected Officials Boycotting President-Elect Trump’s Inauguration

For immediate release:

CARSON, Calif --- California Members of Congress spoke loud and clear with their voices and their action by boycotting the inauguration of Donald Trump. Just days before, as the nation honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Trump’s vitriolic words against civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis added to his routinely hateful diatribe.

The California congressional boycott is a refusal to accept this hateful and divisive behavior as normal. It also sends a message to young and old that women deserve respect not misogynistic degrading words and behavior. California representatives also understand that a nation inclusive of immigrants has always contributed to our country’s strength.

If this is truly a “new day,” a humble apology to the citizens of the United States is in order and a fitting way to begin a term as leader of a free nation.

Assemblymember Gipson represents the 64th Assembly District which includes Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Lynwood, North Long Beach, Rancho Dominguez, South L.A., Torrance, Watts/Willowbrook and Wilmington.
