Assemblymember Gipson Urges Non-Violence at Movie Premiere

For immediate release:

Statement on Straight Outta Compton Release

(Sacramento) – “As an elected official from Compton, who was born and raised in the community of Watts, I am very proud of the acclaim the premiere of Straight Outta Compton has gathered,” states Gipson. “The story of young men finding success despite troubled upbringings is an important message to share. Even more, it is important to remember the struggle that these men, and many of us, faced growing up in South Central Los Angeles.

“While I am grateful for the positive attention the community of Compton has received from this film, I want to caution against those who would exploit this as an opportunity to celebrate gang violence. Our community has fought hard to stay together in times of oppression and hardship, and we do not need any incidence resulting from an event meant to enlighten and encourage one another. For those that will, I would only ask that they to be mindful of the harm that does to the positive changes many have struggled to achieve.

“I hope that everyone who sees Straight Outta Compton enjoys the film, and finds in it an encouraging message.”

Mike Gipson represents the 64th Assembly District. The district includes the cities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor Gateway, Lynwood, North Long Beach, Rancho Dominguez, South Los Angeles, Torrance, Watts/Willowbrook and Wilmington.
